Kaposi sarcoma in AIDS
patients
-
The malignant mesenchymal cells
are induced to grow by growth factors and cytokines released by tumor cells
themselves and HIV infected T-cells.
-
KSHV infected B-cells also contribute
to proliferation of the malignant mesenchymal cells.
-
Tumor spreads widely; skin,
GI, lymph nodes and lung.
Non-Hodgkin lymphomas in
AIDS patients.
-
Observed in 6% of AIDS patients
-
Incidence is 120 times that
of general population.
-
Development is linked to sustained
polyclonal activation of B-cell population. Prolonged stimulation is followed
by somatic mutations leading to neoplastic transformation.
