Central Nervous System Involvement, Continued

Spinal cord involvement
  • Spinal cord pathology is found in 20-30% of AIDS patients.
  • Microscopically the findings resemble those of subacute combined degeneration (vitamin B-12 deficiency).
AIDS associated myopathy and peripheral neuropathy.
  • Inflammatory myopathy.
  • Muscle fiber necrosis and phagocytosis with an infiltrate composed of HIV infected macrophages.
  • In some people treated with AZT, there is a reversible myopathy leading to myoglobinuria.
  • Clinical symptoms include proximal muscle weakness and muscle pain.
  • Measurable increased blood levels of CPK.
