Hormonal imbalance plays a significant role.
  • Increased exposure to estrogen during menstrual cycle is associated with increased risk.
    • Long duration of reproductive life.
    • Nulliparity
    • Late age of first child
  • Ovarian tumors that elaborate estrogen are associated with breast and endometrial cancer.
  • Post menopausal replacement and oral contraceptives are low dose and have not been shown to substantially increase the risk of breast cancer.
  • It appears the imbalanced and/or prolonged estrogen stimulation of the breast ductal epithelium is significant in development of breast cancer.
