Here you see the unbelievably
expanded subarachnoid space containing numerous polymorphonuclear leukocytes.
What do you suspect the exudate looked like grossly?

This slide shows a profound
acute inflammatory infiltrate associated with Hemophilus influenza
meningitis. The organism most likely gained entrance into the subarachnoid
space by way of the blood stream. The child with this condition died shortly
after being admitted to the hospital, despite vigorous antibiotic therapy.
Unfortunately, the child was not brought in until he was virtually moribund.
You should have no trouble finding the polymorphonuclear leukocytes in
this slide. |
