Multiple sclerosis is one of several demyelinating diseases.
  • MS, like most in the group, are acquired conditions.
  • Preferential damage to the myelin.
  • Symptoms come from disruption of transmission of electrical impulses along axons.
  • CNS has limited capacity to regenerate myelin.
  • Secondary axonal damage also occurs.
  • Other demyelinating syndromes include:
    • Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy
    • JC virus infection of oligodendrocytes.
    • A spectrum of inherited disorders collectively known as leukodystrophies
