Mr. Harvey has a paraneoplastic syndrome.
  • Clinical symptoms are related to production of humoral agent, not direct mass effect of tumor or its metastases.
  • Paraneoplastic syndromes are seen in about 10% of patients with visceral malignancies.
  • May be the first manifestation of an occult malignancy.
  • May prove as clinically significant as the tumor itself.
  • May mimic metastases or other conditions, thereby delaying proper diagnosis.
  • Categories of paraneoplastic syndromes:
    • endocrinopathies
    • nerve and muscle syndromes
    • dermatologic disorders
