Hodgkins in a nutshell
  • Bimodal distribution. Young adults and older people.
  • Malignant cell is the Reed-Sternberg cell.
  • The RS cell must be seen in its proper background.
    • Reactive lymphocytes and macrophages
    • Plasma cells
    • Eosinophils
  • The background is a benign response to the RS cell.
  • Three major histologic types and one controversial one.
    • Nodular sclerosing
    • Mixed cellularity
    • Lymphocyte predominance
    • Lymphocyte depletion (may not be HD)
  • Staging is critical to therapy selection and outcome.
  • Presence (B) or absence (A) of constitutional symptoms is important in staging and predicting outcome.
