Blunt force abdominal injuries may not always be immediately apparent.
 
Abdominal blunt force, such as a punch with a fist, may lead to:
  • Lacerated liver or spleen, which would lead almost immediately to hemorrhagic shock.
  • Contusion to bowel, may be subtle.
  • Duodenum and small bowel are especially susceptible because of proximity to spine.
    • Contused portion of bowel will break down.
    • May lead to peritonitis, several days after injury.
