What is meant by the term "shaken baby syndrome?"
  Whiplash or rotatory CNS injury.
  • Rarely occurs as an isolated injury.
  • Often there is blunt force injury somewhere on the child as well.
  • Unconscious child.
  • Clinical evidence of cerebral edema.
  • May have subdural hematoma.
  • Bruises and rib fractures where the child was gripped.
  • The image to the right is from the autopsy of child who died of shaken baby syndrome.
    • There is swelling of the brain.
    • There is subdural bleeding
  • Roll the cursor over the image if you're having trouble getting oriented.
