Whiplash or rotatory CNS injury. Rarely occurs as an isolated injury. Often there is blunt force injury somewhere on the child as well. Unconscious child. Clinical evidence of cerebral edema. May have subdural hematoma.
Bruises and rib fractures where the child was gripped. The image to the right is from the autopsy of child who died of shaken baby syndrome. There is swelling of the brain. There is subdural bleeding Roll the cursor over the image if you're having trouble getting oriented.
