There
are basically two ways to go:
-
Oral replacement with
ferrous sulfate:
-
325 mg tid (three time a day),
taken between meals.
-
Typically requires about 6 months
of therapy.
-
Use of vitamin C with the iron
will keep the iron in the reduced state and facilitate absorption.
-
About 25% of people will experience
fairly annoying GI side effects:
-
nausea
-
cramping
-
diarrhea or even constipation.
-
Noncompliance is the primary
reason for failure or delayed improvement with oral therapy.
-
Parenteral therapy IM
or IV.
-
Useful with malabsorption,
inflammatory bowel disease, etc.
-
High requirement.
-
Intolerance to oral preparations.
So how will we know it's
