I'll bet you've already figured this one out.
- Reticulocyte count
- This is the biggie.
- Since the retic count
tells us how many new red cells are entering the circulation, this
is what we follow initially.
- His retic count rises
quickly and levels off after about 5-10 days.
- Hemoglobin and hematocrit
- These will come up much
more slowly.
- We're trying to change
the course of an ocean liner here.
- It may take from 2
to 4 months to correct Mr. Herbert's anemia.
- As long as it's working,
and he's in no serious distress, we'll wait it out.
- As for his colon cancer
- He'll need to be re-scoped
in a year.
- We'll follow him with
periodic physical exams and
- Labs, such as the CEA.
- If there's any hint of
recurrence, we'll need an abdominal CT and another colonscopy.
