Remember Mr. Herbert had a substantially elevated CEA. 
  • His value was 36 ng/ml
    • The expected for a non-smoker is < 2.5 ng/ml

But there were a number of conditions in which there are elevations.

  • GI cancers
  • Breast and ovarian cancer
  • But on the benign side, we may see mild elevations with
    • emphysema
    • ulcerative colitis
    • cirrhosis

So, is the CEA useless?
