- Present in 65% of patients with advanced cirrhosis.
- Can cause massive hemorrhage.
- Accounts for death in approximately 30% of cirrhotics.
- Potential for hemorrhage is made worse by lousy clotting potential owing to decreased vitamin K dependent clotting factors (II, VII, IX and X).
