    Epithelia and Cell Junctions

As you saw in the lecture, knowledge of the specialized types of intercellular junctions is a very important aspect of epithelial cell biology.
    • Much of our information about these has come from electron microscopy.
    • Study the ultrastructural and diagrammatic pictures of the lateral or intercellular specializations of epithelial cells shown in Figs. 5.10 through 5.13, and be sure you can answer the following questions.

Name 3 major categories of these junctions and indicate the major functions of each.

What actually is the structure that light microscopists call the “terminal web”?

What type of epithelial junction is associated with the basement membrane?

Next comes either an online self-help quiz or the next unit (cell structures). Here's a sample question from this unit.
