you saw in the lecture, knowledge of the specialized types of
intercellular junctions is a very important aspect of epithelial
cell biology.
- Much of our information about
these has come from electron microscopy.
- Study the ultrastructural and
diagrammatic pictures of the lateral or intercellular
specializations of epithelial cells shown in Figs. 5.10 through
5.13, and be sure you can answer the following questions.
Name 3 major categories of
these junctions and indicate the major functions of each.
What actually is the structure that light microscopists call the
“terminal web”?
What type of epithelial junction is associated with the basement
membrane?
