Using the diagram in Fig. 19.15,
review how the various stages of the uterine (menstrual) cycle
correlate in time with the various stages of follicular development
in the ovary. What
hormones directly affect uterine histology and what are their
sources?
Using slides
80,
81,
82,
83 and
84, examine
specimens of uterus in different stages of the menstrual cycle
(Fig. 22-17). These slides do not show distinct
differences between early and late in either the proliferative or
the secretory phases, as in Junqueira’s figures, but at each stage you
identify, note the thickness of the endometrium (the basal and
functional layers are also more easily distinguished here); the
presence or absence of mitotic figures, the appearance of the glands
and secretory cells, and the nature of the surface epithelium and
the vascular supply. On each slide, endometrium is at one "end" of
the section with deeper layers at the other "end". Note that some
specimens are not uniformly well-stained.

During the cycle, what changes
occur in the endometrial glands and in the various tissue layers,
and what is the significance of these changes?
Why is it important that the
basal layer of the endometrium is not involved in menstruation?
How is the endometrial lining
re-established after menstruation?
Now for the
cervix and vagina. |
