Fibrocartilage
contains large bundles of collagen fibers in its extracellular
matrix, interspersed with areas of more hyaline (glassy or
translucent) ground substance (Fig 7-5).
- Examine the tissue on
slide 131,
which is all fibrocartilage but does not include perichondrium,
noting the differences with hyaline cartilage.
What is the functional
significance of this type of cartilage?
Elastic cartilage resembles
hyaline cartilage somewhat in histological, appearance unless
special stains are used to reveal the elastic fibers (Fig. 7-4).
- Examine the cartilage found in
the epiglottis (slide 87) and the external ear (slide 56),
noting the organization of chondrocytes, fibers, and the perichondrium.
What is the
functional significance of this cartilage ?
Bone
is next. |
