The reading for M470/M570 will consist of two books, multiple current journal articles drawn from recent scientific journals as well as historical documents covering the period of 1492 to 1789. Expect to read between 75 and 100 pages per week in this course.

The major textbook sources are:

  • Alchon, Susan, Austin; A Pest in the Land; New World Epidemics in a Global Perspective, University of New Mexico Press, Albuquerque, 2003
  • Crosby, Alfred; The Columbian Exchange, Praeger Press, Westport, CT, most recent edition (2003)

Recommended but not required:

  • Wills, Christopher; Yellow Fever Black Goddess, Addison-Wesley,1996

Student responsibilities: Student attendance and class participation is expected. Each class will consist of lecture with discussion of assigned topics.

This makes some kind of sense. So how do I earn a grade?
