Peripheral Nerve - Cross Section

A peripheral nerve is composed of bundles (fasciculi) of nerve fibers. A nerve fiber consists of an axon together with its myelin sheath or coverings. Under high magnification the axon appears as a dark spot surrounded by a lighter circular area, the myelin sheath. There are also groups of smaller, poorly-myelinated axons between the large, well-myelinated axons.

PERIPHERAL NERVE - CROSS SECTION, high magnification.
