    Cartilage and Bone

Fibrocartilage contains large bundles of collagen fibers in its extracellular matrix, interspersed with areas of more hyaline (glassy or translucent) ground substance.
    • In your slides of fibrocartilage note that it lacks a perichondrium.

How does the location of fibrocartilage help explain why it must be different from hyaline and elastic cartilage?

Elastic cartilage resembles hyaline cartilage somewhat in histological, appearance unless special stains are used to reveal the elastic fibers (Fig. 7-4).

What do you think is the functional significance of this cartilage ?

    Bone is next.
