Major Immune System Abnormalities in AIDS

Lymphopenia
  • Primarily due to loss of CD4+ helper/inducer cells.
  • One observes an inversion of the CD4:CD8 ratio
Decreased T-Cell Function
  • Loss of memory cells
  • Decrease response to mitogens
  • Decreased cytotoxicity
  • Decreased interferon production
Altered B-Cell Function
  • Hypergammaglobulinemia with circulating immune complexes.
    • Often shows up as an elevated protein on chemistry profile tests.
  • Poor antibody response to new antigenic stimulation.
