Slide 119: Heart with fibroelastosis,
trichrome stain
|
Now with the aid of a
trichrome stain, which highlights the collage (blue), you can appreciate
the tremendous thickening of the endocardium. It doesn't take much
imagination to see how this would substantially reduce the pump's ability
to to fill during diastole. This is a good example of restrictive
heart failure.
See this slide with the
virtual microscope.

This is an uncommon disease;
endocardial fibroelastosis. With this stain, you can see how markedly thickened
the endocardium is. Note the extension of fibrous tissue into the superficial
myocardium. You can see that collagen is principal constituent of this
pathologically thickened and malfunctioning lining to the cardiac chambers.
As you can guess, this alteration greatly restricts the ability of the
heart to fill and pump effectively. |
