The Belly Turret of a B-17.

  • The gun turret on the belly of the plane allowed 360 degree range of motion.
  • The turret was tiny and thus operated by the smallest crew member.
  • A trap door at the top allowed the gunner to get in, and once sealed the turret ball could be rotated.
  • The gunner would get in the ball once the plane reached the range of enemy fighters and he might stay cooped up in the position shown at the right for many hours.
  • After returning from a successful mission, RK noted his left leg was painful and stiff.
    • The next morning his leg was markedly swollen from the knee down.
    • He was immediately diagnosed with a deep leg vein thrombosis.
