It's always a balancing act, thrombosis and thrombolysis.

Blood clotting is a great thing, as long as it's where and when you want it.
  • A thrombus is a pathological clot.
  • Venous side thrombi generally mean
    • Stasis and factor activation.
  • Arterial side thrombi generally mean
    • Platelet activation and/or vascular injury.

Strategies to prevent thrombosis depend on knowing whether it's arterial or venous.

  • Venous, means you're treating the clotting proteins with heparin and/or Coumadin.
  • Arterial, you better be using an antiplatelet drug, such as aspirin.
  • Recurrence, or thrombosis in a young person, means you better dig deeper.
    • Is it too much clotting potential, or
    • Too little thrombolysis?
