Evaluation of Hemostasis
- Quality of the blood specimen is critical
for
reliable results.
- Tests are done on citrated plasma (citrate
chelates the calcium to prevent clotting.)
- Hemolyzed or partially clotted specimens will
give unreliable results.
Screening
tests
- CBC; anemia, RBC morphology, platelet
numbers.
- Prothrombin time (PT):
measures extrinsic path.

- Activated partial thromboplastin
time (aPTT):
- Thrombin Time (TT): measures
conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin. Click here.
- Platelet count: The number
is helpful, but it says nothing about platelet function.
