How do
you get a Klebsellia pneumonia?
- It's a GI bug, so it's in many people's
throats.
- Alcoholics are prone to aspiration.
- Suck oral or gastric contents down, and
that's all it takes.
- So what tips you off to a pneumonia?
- Fever
- Cough productive of sputum
- Chest pain (pleurisy)
- Shortness of breath (SOB)
- Rapid respirations
- Poor color, especially of mucous membranes
and nail beds. May be outright
cyanotic.
- Left shifted CBC differential (bacteria)

- If there is pain, the patient may have
limited chest movement (splinting).
- Rales on auscultation, indicating junk
in the alveolar spaces.
