Ms. BB has a terrible headache, fever and is badly
bruised.
- Ms. BB is a 23 year-old university student.
- Three days ago she developed a sore
throat.
- Flu-like symptoms and a bad
headache.
- She developed a high fever and was so weak
she couldn't get out of bed.
- Earlier this morning she began to develop
spontaneous areas of bruising.

- A friend who stopped in to check on her
said she had never seen anyone look so sick and called for an ambulance.
- In the emergency room, her physical exam
revealed:
- BP = 60/20 mmHg; P = 104/min, T = 103.2, R
= 28/min
- Photophobia and stiff neck.
- Pain in the back and down her leg when her
leg was raised.
- Many 'bruises' such as are seen in this
photograph.
- Ocular exam did not reveal papilledema
(protrusion of the optic nerve).
