Slide 45: Liver with post necrotic cirrhosis

What does the term "bile duct duplication" really refer to? What is meant be the term "post necrotic" cirrhosis? Other forms of cirrhosis?

Bile duct duplication is in part a misnomer. Although some bile duct growth does occur, the histological pattern is partly the result of the collapse of the lobules, giving the appearance of more bile ducts than should be there. It's not entirely an "optical illusion," but it's not all bile duct growth either.

Post necrotic cirrhosis is the result of massive liver cell necrosis. It almost always follows a fulminate case of type B or C hepatitis. But keep in mind, the majority of the cases of viral hepatitis never reach this stage. The usual outcome is complete healing with no significant long term liver sequelae.

What I want you to do with the basic categories of cirrhosis is develop a scheme of classification based on etiology. Morphological approaches are no longer of value.
