Etiology and pathogenesis of Hodgkin Disease
- Hodgkin Disease is a
clonal malignancy.
- The Reed-Sternberg
(RS) cell is the malignant cell.
- RS cells are aneuploid,
but contain no consistent genetic abnormality.
- Express surface markers
characteristic of antigen processing.
- Molecular analysis of
the Ig gene rearrangements suggest B cell origin.
- The characteristic
background of reactive lymphoid cells is in response to cytokines
secreted by the RS cell.
- Hodgkin Disease may be
related to EBV infection.
- History of mononucleosis
in many patients.
- EBV genome in
RS cells.
- EBV transctiption
is seen in many cases.
- Identical EBV DNA
configuration in all tumor cells within a given case of HD.
