Team-Based Learning, Case Development & Assessment

Dr. Dan Lodge-Rigal

Week one

This week we're going to look at some of the education literature dealing with mechanics of team and problem-based learning. But first we're going to start by looking at aspects of teaching and learning. Then we'll design several cases suitable for either format.

Occasional issue with some of the PDF files: Mischief has gotten into some of the PDF files. Every now and then one will not open when you click the link. I'm not sure of the problem, but I've found that if you close the new window and click again on the link, the file will open. I have also found that if you download the file to your own computer (right click and choose the 'save as' option), you can open the saved copy without problem. Unsolved mystery.

  • Reading: (I know it looks like lot, but some are just one page.)
  • Discussion: Learning styles, Merrill 5-Star, Michaelsen essentials, elements of a TBL or PBL case.
  • Discovery: Check out the sites, or others of your choosing, for a suitable case.
  • Writing: Work up one case suitable for a TBL problem. Be sure to include the IRAT, GRAT, informational source to the students and the final summary. You might have something in mind from own experiences. Otherwise, use a case from one of the online sources I've suggested.
