Absolutely!
Accelerated atherosclerosis, venous and arterial thrombosis.
- Other conditions associated with high levels
of homocysteine.
- Medical conditions: renal failure,
hypothryoidism, pernicious anemia.
- Drugs: methotrxate, phenytoins,
theophyline, oral contraceptives.
- Others: pregnancy, smoking,
postprandial spikes (about 7% of population).
How does an elevated homocysteine cause
increased atherosclerosis and thrombosis?
- Recall that arterial side thrombosis results
largely from
- Platelet activation, and/or
- Endothelial cell injury.
- Here are a few changes noted with high levels
of homocysteine.
- Increased endothelial cell superoxide and hydrogen peroxide
production.
- Inactivation of protein C.
- Selected decreased in prostacyclin synthesis.
- Increase synthesis or thomboxane A2
- Increase in factors V and VIII.
- Inhibition of thrombomodulin and heparin
sulfate expression.
- Enhances the binding of lipoproteins to
fibrin, possibly potentiating thrombosis.
Could you ask for much more that increases the
likelihood of arterial side thrombosis? So,
what do we do for Mr. JH?
