Viral exanthem vs.
petechiae?
- Tiffany's spots are regional, not all
over her body.
- In fact, they seem gravity dependent.
- They vary slightly in color from red to
blue-brown.
- Her platelet count is quite low.
- A viral exanthem is a skin eruption seen
with acute viral illnesses.
- It's often a vasculitis, probably on the basis of
antigen/antibody deposits.
- It tends to occur all over but may be more
prominent on the trunk.
- Platelet numbers shouldn't drop.

- These specks are petechiae and have
formed because of Tiffany's low platelet count.
- The lesions themselves are small
hemorrhages due to ruptured capillaries.
- This says something about normal wear and tear
on our vascular system and the roll platelets play in its daily health and
maintenance.
So, how do we confirm the
diagnosis?
