Viral exanthem vs. petechiae?

  • Tiffany's spots are regional, not all over her body.
    • In fact, they seem gravity dependent.
    • They vary slightly in color from red to blue-brown.
  • Her platelet count is quite low.
  • A viral exanthem is a skin eruption seen with acute viral illnesses.
    • It's often a vasculitis, probably on the basis of antigen/antibody deposits.
    • It tends to occur all over but may be more prominent on the trunk.
    • Platelet numbers shouldn't drop.
  • These specks are petechiae and have formed because of Tiffany's low platelet count.
  • The lesions themselves are small hemorrhages due to ruptured capillaries.
  • This says something about normal wear and tear on our vascular system and the roll platelets play in its daily health and maintenance.

So, how do we confirm the diagnosis?                                                                   Back
