Our patient had only 12% of the expected amount of factor IX
  • By knowing the proteins measured in the aPTT and PT, we were able substantially narrow down the possibilities, and target the most likely culprits for quantification. Pretty slick
  • This is classic Hemophilia B
  • Factor IX deficiency is generally not as severe as Hemophilia A
    • Hemophilia A =  VIII deficiency.
  • Boys with factor IX levels of 12-15% tend be mild bleeders.
  • Those with little or no factor IX may be just as severe as Hemophilia A.
    • Here's an example of a hemorrhage not uncommon in boys with a severe bleeding tendency, who are learning to ride a bicycle.
  • Both VIII and IX deficiencies are sex-linked recessive traits.
  • Factor IX is vitamin K dependent.
    • VIII is not.

The history gave it away.
