Slide 216: Small intestine with
intussusception

This is a section of bowel that has been sleeved
inside of another portion of bowel. The peristaltic action has picked up one
piece of bowel and pulled it inside the portion just downstream. Kind of like
getting coat sleeves turned inside out several times over. It’s very painful and
if not reduced, will lead to vascular compromise and infarction of the segment
of bowel tucked inside.
