Hepatitis B should
be considered a sexually transmitted disease.
- Although Hepatitis B can be spread by
blood and blood products, today the main method of dissemination is
sexual contact.
- Ms. JS's unfaithful boyfriend contracted
it in one of his escapades.
- He brought it home.
- His flu-like illness 4 months back was, in
fact, hepatitis.
- Believe it or not, the majority of people
who come down with Hepatitis B don't become jaundiced.
|
|
- Ms. JS will recover, but not everyone is
so lucky.
- A small percentage will develop chronic
hepatitis, where:
- the virus persists for years,
possibly the life of the person,
- the continuously mounted T4
lymphocyte response results in destruction of the liver.
|
|
- It becomes an autoimmune injury.
- People who end up with chronic hepatitis,
never develop an antibody to the surface antigen of Hepatitis B.
No surface antibody, no immunity.
So what's important with
this case?
