What do we really know? Seemingly minor puncture wound. Symptoms of infection. No pathogen cultured. CT with muscle destruction and gas. Muscle enzymes off the chart. Elevated WBC count and left shift. Hemolytic anemia. Disastrous clotting studies.
A call from the unit tells us Mr. BB has just died and his wife wants and autopsy.
Tissue sections of the involved muscle show numerous, large, gram positive rods. (Roll cursor) Cultures of the muscle reveal an anaerobic rod, with a double zone of hemolysis on blood agar.

Mr. BB died of a  Clostridium perfringens infection.                                   Back
