Hey, we're
making progress. Two down and one to go for myelogenous neoplasms.
Acute myelogenous leukemia,
characterized by clonal proliferation of an immature myeloid precursor cell.
Myelodysplastic syndromes,
characterized by ineffective erythropoiesis and a variety of cytopenias.
Chronic myeloproliferative
disorders, of which chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is one.
Chronic myeloproliferative disorders
are characterized by increased production of "terminally" differentiated myeloid
cells (RBCs, WBCs, platelets, etc.).
These are diseases of the "stem
cell," the basic progenitor cell of the bone marrow.
When the stem cell is sick,
everything that flows from it is sick too.
