Chronic
myeloproliferative disorders
-
The multipotential stem cell
is the neoplastic cell in these conditions.
-
The neoplastic stem cell
does the following:
-
Clones itself, as all stem cells
do.
-
Gives rise to one or more
of the following:
-
a malignant erythroid
line.
-
a malignant myeloid line
-
a malignant megakaryocytic
line.
-
In time, these deranged cell
lines replace the bone marrow, effectively squeezing out
and suppressing the healthy population.
-
Chronic myeloproliferative disorders
differ
from other leukemias in that initially the malignant
cell
lines do complete differentiation to their respective "terminal" cell.
-
RBC
-
WBC and/or
-
Platelet forming megakaryocytes.
-
This unregulated proliferation
of the neoplastic derived lines results in
-
Marrow hypercellularity
with increased hematopoiesis, and
-
Elevated peripheral blood
counts.
There are four major
categories of MPDs.
