Prognosis for AML
  • AML is a difficult disease to treat and cures are rare.
    • 15-30% are disease free at 5 years.
  • Allogeneic bone marrow transplant is fast becoming the treatment of choice.
  • Prognosis is linked to particular chromosomal abnormalities.
  • Those with better outcomes:
    • t(8;21) translocation and
    • inversion of chromosme 16
  • Those associated with a poor outcome:
    • Philadelphia chromosme, t(9;22)
    • t(11;23) tranloscation
    • AML arising in the background of myelodysplastic syndrome.
