There are three basic parts of a urinalysis.
  • Visual inspection.
    • Color, clarity, even smell (ketones smell fruity).
    • Keep in mind that color and clarity can change dramatically depending on your state of hydration and urine concentration.
  • The dipstick reactions (varies a bit from company to company).
    • protein
    • albumin
    • pH
    • glucose 
    • ketones
    • blood 
    • bilirubin
    • some measurement of WBCs and/or bacterial enzymes
  • Microscopic examination of the urine sediment.
    • Looking for casts
    • cells 
    • bacteria
    • crystals, etc.
