Acute Diarrhea

Chronic diarrhea

Acute diarrhea,  presenting syndromes, duration less than 2 weeks.

  • Watery diarrhea
    • Large volume, watery stools suggest small bowel etiology.
    • Infectious agents include cholera or toxigenic E. coli.
    • Reduced food intake has no effect on symptoms.
 
  • Malabsorbtion may also produce large volume watery stools.
    • Associated with much rectal gas and frothy stools.
    • Reduced food intake reduces symptoms.
  • Dysentery
    • Diarrhea with bloody mucus.
    • Indicates inflammation and ulceration of colonic mucosa.
    • Colicky pain
    • Pus cells seen in fecal smears.

The most common causes of diarrhea lasting less than two weeks.
