Fever patterns
- Normal diurnal variation
- Peak temperature in late afternoon or early
evening
- Variation will persist, even in patients with
fever.
- Rigor, a true shaking chill and fever
- Bacterial infection
- Sepsis
- Less commonly viruses and drugs
- Hectic fever (wide swings)
- Abscess
- Disseminated tuberculosis
- Collagen vascular diseases

- Relapsing fever, typical of malaria
- Characterized by episodes of shaking chills
and high fever, separated by 1-3 days of normal temperatures.
- Lowered body temperature may be seen
with:
- Diabetic ketoacidosis, uremia and hepatic
failure
