Mechanisms of Heat Regulation

Causes of Fever

  • To increase body temperature
    • Muscular work
    • Shivering
    • Cellular metabolism
    • Vasoconstriction
    • Seeking warm places
  • To lower body temperature
    • Vasodilatation
    • Sweating
    • Seeking cold places
  • Infection
  • Tissue injury
  • Infarction
  • Trauma
  • Malignancy
  • Immune mediated disorders
  • Endocrine disorders

Production of fever
  • Tissue injury, infection, etc stimulate monocytes to release
    • Interleukin 1, TNF and Interferon alpha.
    • These agents cause hypothalmic production of Prostaglandin E.
    • Prostaglandin E causes reset of temperature set-point.
    • Increased heat generation and conservation produces fever.
