Fever is one of the most common complaints that causes a person to seek medical help.

  • Four basic clinical categories
    • Patients with fever and obvious symptoms and/or localizing signs.
    • Those with fever and skin rash
    • Those with fever and lymphadenopathy
    • Those with fever but no other symptom or localizing sign.
  • The majority of patients with fever as their only complaint will either
    • Defervesce spontaneously, or
    • Develop localizing clinical or laboratory findings within 2 - 3 weeks.
  • Unexplained and persistent fever beyond 3 weeks should be considered an FUO.
