M620: Pedagogical Methods in the Health Sciences
    Course Requirements and Assessments
     
     

    This 3 credit hour course will meet every Friday in the Medical Sciences Alumni room (JH 102) from 1:30 to 4:30.

    Reading Assignments: In addition to the journal articles listed in the syllabus, the following text is required:

    • McKeachie, W.J. (get the newest edition). Teaching tips: strategies, research and theory for college and university teachers. Boston, MA: Houghton Mifflin Company.

    This is recommended, but not required:

    • Angelo, TA and Cross, KP, Classroom Assessment Techniques; San Francisco, CA: Jossey Bass Publishers.

    Course Requirements and Assessment: Students will be graded based on:

    • Participation – is based on the following: (25% of grade)
      • Class attendance  
      • Active participant in discussions
      • Peer analyst for microteaching sessions
      • Presentation of one microteaching session
      • Presentation of teaching portfolio or mock classroom research grant.
    • Two (2) teaching observations of a health sciences instructor of your choice (15% of grade)
      • Students must request participation to sit in on at least two classes of the instructor of the same course, and fill out a detailed personal analysis (see end of syllabus for questions to be addressed)
    • Preparation of a sample course syllabus and description (15%).
      • This course must be a NEW course that you would hope to teach in the future. You must construct the syllabus, determine the appropriate assignments, and choose appropriate readings.
      • Students must present their sample syllabus and description to the class (a.k.a. the "review board") and justify its creation.
    • Preparation of a teaching philosophy/statement (10%)
    • Teaching Portfolio  (35% of grade).
