kinase essentially stop the process in its tracks.

Imatinib mesylate (Gleevec),
given orally.

Unfortunately in time altered
cells with different BCR-ABL kinases emerge, and the condition takes
off again.

The newer drugs, however, buy
time.

Interferon-alpha is also effective
in suppressing the malignant stem cells, but the side effects are pretty
bad.
