  • They actually don't do any better.
  • If untreated, they will enter a blast crisis too, but for them there is no accelerated phase to tell you it's coming.
Prognosis and treatment.
  • Things are looking better all the time for folks with CML
  • Allogeneic bone marrow transplant leads to cures in about 75%.
  • Newly developed drug that block the action of the renegade BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase essentially stop the process in its tracks.
    • Imatinib mesylate (Gleevec), given orally.
    • Unfortunately in time altered cells with different BCR-ABL kinases emerge, and the condition takes off again.
    • The newer drugs, however, buy time.
  • Interferon-alpha is also effective in suppressing the malignant stem cells, but the side effects are pretty bad.
