  • Homoscyteine levels: High levels cause both venous and arterial thrombosis.
    • Works by diminshing activity of proteins C and S, therefore the routine labs (PT and aPTT) will be normal.
    • Folic acid in large quantities will drop homocysteine to safe levels.
  • Anti-Cardiolipin antibody levels: Also known as lupus anticoagulant, this antibody causes a prolonged aPTT in the lab, but paradoxically causes hypercoagulation in the patient.
  • Lower frequency problems: genetically abnormal clotting factors or plasminogen.
