  • According to the Kenya Demographic Health Survey, vital indicators have worsened over the past 10 years.
  • Infant mortality has risen since 1993 from 67/1000 live births to 73.7/1000.
  • Crude Birth Rate has fallen from 52/1000 to 38/1000.
  • Crude Death Rate has fallen from 14 to 11 per 1000.
  • Life expectancy has also dropped from 57 years for males in 1989 to less than 50 years in 1999.
  • These worsening health status indicators are due to a number of factors.
    • poverty, malnutrition and inadequate access to clean water
    • resurgence of malaria and tuberculosis
    • HIV/AIDS pandemic
