  • Bone marrow findings
    • "Dry tap," in other words you can't aspirate anything while attempting a marrow aspirate.
    • The fibrosis is thought be due to release of fibrogenic factors from megakaryocytes and/or platelets.
      • Platelet derived growth factor (PDGF)
      • TGF-beta
  • Peripheral blood.
    • Marked cytopenias.
    • Nucleated RBCs and RBC precursors.
  • Extensive extramedullary hematopoiesis.
    • Spleen, liver, lymph nodes.
  • Survival varies from 1 to 5 years.
    • Infections
    • Bleeding
    • Rarely transformation to AML (blast crisis).
