Mr. Robinson definitely has a problem with undernutrition.

Depression and swallowing disorders both can cause weight loss. He needs to be evaluated for both.

  • It's beyond the scope of our mission to thoroughly go into depression now, but we can ask a few questions that will help. Here's a form to help standardize the process.

  • A score of 9 or greater needs to be taken seriously.
  • Mr. Robinson's score of 18 means depression is likely a major factor for him and may have something to do with his weight loss. We need a psychiatrist.

What about a dysphagia associated with his Parkinson's disease?

  • Dysphagia is the term applied to a wide variety of swallowing problems.
  • Normal swallowing is a complex operation involving at least 7 basics steps.
  • Parkinson's patients may not be aware they have a dysphagia.
  • Symptoms associated with dysphagia are not always so obvious.
Let's get a speech therapy consult to see if there's a swallowing disorder.
