Types of myeloproliferative disorders.

  • Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML)
  • Polycythemia vera (PCV)
  • Essential thrombocythemia, and
  • Myelofibrosis with myeloid metaplasia.
We're going focus on CML, but here are some interesting things common to all four MPDs:
  • The neoplastic stem cells are able to circulate in the blood.
  • This means they can colonize other potential hematopoietic organs.
    • Spleen most frequently, causing marked splenomegaly.
    • Less often liver and lymph nodes.
  • Often terminate as marrow fibrosis
    • Leads to profound peripheral cytopenias.
  • Progress in time to an acute leukemia (blast crisis), CML especially.
  • There is considerable overlap in clinical presentations.
